Abstract
A three years crossbreeding experiment was conducted between males of Red Tilapia fish (RT) and females of Nile Tilapia fish (NT) to obtain F1 crossbred (½RT½NT), and F2 crossbred (½RT½NT)². The main objectives of the present study were: 1) to compare growth and carcass traits in different genetic groups obtained, and 2) to characterize on SNPs basis the candidate IGF-II gene in Tilapias fish. Data of 5986 fries at tagging and 5660 fishes at harvesting (40 sires and 120 dams) were used. Growth traits were represented by body weights at tagging (12 weeks) and biweekly thereafter up to 28 weeks, daily weight gains during biweekly intervals (12 to 28 weeks). Also, 1206 fishes at slaughtering (28 week) fathered by 40 sires and mothered by 120 dams were used in evaluation of carcass traits in terms of weights of slaughter, carcass, trunk, viscera, head, fillet and fillet yield. The crossbred fishes of ½RT½NT and (½RT½NT)2 had favourable means than purebred fishes of RT and NT in body weights and gains and carcass traits. Monomorphic AA genotype with fragment length of 397 bp for IGF-II gene was detected in the four genetic groups. In NT fish, AA genotype with single band of 379 bp was detected, while two bands with fragment length of 300 and 379 bps were observed in RT fish. In ½RT½NT cross, three bands of 200, 300 and 379 bps were detected, while two bands with fragment length of 300 and 379 bps were observed in (½RT½NT)2 cross.
